Wildfire Smoke & Air Quality Safety
Summer air quality can change quickly. Here's how we make decisions to keep campers and staff safe when wildfire smoke or other conditions affect the air we breathe.
How does the Y decide whether to hold outdoor activities?
We closely monitor local air quality throughout the day using the Air Quality Index (AQI) and adjust activities based on current conditions. The health and safety of our campers and staff is our top priority.
What happens at each AQI level?
- AQI 0–50 (Good): Camp activities continue as scheduled, including outdoor play and field trips.
- AQI 51–100 (Moderate): Outdoor activities continue, while staff monitor campers who may be more sensitive to air pollution, including those with asthma or other respiratory conditions.
- AQI 101–150 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Outdoor time is significantly reduced or moved indoors. Campers with asthma, heart or lung conditions, and other sensitive individuals will remain indoors whenever possible.
- AQI 151 or higher (Unhealthy): Outdoor physical activities are canceled or relocated indoors. Camp programming continues inside our facilities, where ventilation and air filtration help provide a safer environment.
My child has asthma or another respiratory condition. What should I do?
Please make sure we have current health information and any necessary medications, such as an inhaler, on file at camp. This helps our staff support your camper if air quality changes during the day.
Can I keep my child home if I'm concerned about air quality?
Yes. Every child responds differently to smoke and changing air quality. While the Y follows established health guidelines and takes precautions to reduce exposure, we encourage families to make the decision that's best for their camper. If you feel your child would be more comfortable or healthier remaining home during periods of reduced air quality, we fully support that decision.
What happens to camp programming when outdoor activities are canceled?
Programming continues indoors. Our facilities offer ventilation and air filtration to help provide a safer environment while keeping camp engaging.
Who can I contact with questions about air quality procedures?
Please reach out to our camp team at daycamp@whatcomymca.org with any questions. We appreciate your trust as we make decisions based on current conditions and public health recommendations.
